Prison history
In the second cell in the first floor cell corridor you can find an exhibit about the history of prisons in Trondheim. In the centre of the room you can see a model of Trondheim prison, originally Trondheim workhouse. Trondheim has had many different places used for imprisonment throughout history.
The Criminal Asylum was originally built as a “slavery”, a place were criminals were sentenced to hard labour (“slave labour”). This practice goes back to the 17th century at least, were the poor were often sent to work at fortresses to build them.
The area the museum lies in, Kalvskinnet, has a long history of institutions for incarceration of criminals, the poor and the sick. We offer a city tour on the subject for school classes in secondary education or higher. Contact formidling@justismusee.no for more infomation.
