The Prison of Madness focuses on what happens when someone who commits a crime might be not guilty by reason of insanity. The exhibit “The Criminal Asylum” is explored inside the old cells. Students examine questions such as:
- What does it mean to be not guilty by reason of insanity?
- How has society treated such people throughout history?
- What happens today if a serious crime is committed by a person with a severe mental illness?
Students learn about the people who were patients here, how they lived and what sort of treatment (if any) they might get.
