Prides at risk – how to protect the right to peaceful protest?

This year, any attempt to organize prides in Turkey is being cracked down, but in 2014, 100,000 people took to the streets of Istanbul to celebrate Pride. This occurs without any single law being changed.

This year, 200,000 people attended Budapest Pride, even though HungarianPresident Victor Orban threatened that anyone who participated would be prosecuted. The police made no attempt to stop the Pride, despite a recently adopted ban on the public display of rainbow symbols and Pride.

This year, 100,000 people participated in the Pride in Oslo with safe police protection, but in 2022, two people were killed and dozens injured in an attack on Oslo Pride. In Norway, homosexuality was decriminalized in 1972, and discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression prohibited in 2013.

How are the police and the judiciary used under different political regimes to protect or obstruct queer rights? And how can we contribute to safe prides – everywhere?
